Nordic Ski Patrol
The Northfield Mountain Nordic Ski Patrol (Northfield, Massachusetts) is an
organization of volunteer first responders trained and nationally
certified in winter safety, outdoor emergency care, cross country skiing,
land navigation, mountain travel, search and rescue, and winter survival.
The signups for patrol duty are now online. Check the schedule for accuracy. To sign up for specific days, send me e-mail, and I'll put your name on the Calendar.
Following the snow storm, Bill Gabriel opened the mountain for public skiing on Sunday the seventh. Although the trails were not groomed, three patrollers and about a dozen patrons enjoyed breaking trails in at least a foot of fresh powder. The Mountain may re-open on Saturday, December 13, if ski conditions remain good. Please phone ahead: 800-859-2960 to check on open hours and trail conditions before heading over.
While featuring mostly EMS-branded apparel and gear, The North Face is represented. You’ll find LED headlamps, crampons, ice axes, tents, packs, and more, all appropriate for winter activities.
Dates and activities for Patroller and Candidate training have been added to the patrol calendar. Check these required events and put them on your agenda now.
The Appalachian Mountain Club offers many winter workshops, clinics, and activities. The Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Festival, January 23-25, looks pretty interesting. For a complete list, go to the AMC Outdoor Adventures web site.
This season’s Eastern Division Nordic Fest runs from January 30 to February 1, 2004, in the Northern Catskills of New York State. Arrive Friday evening and spend all of Saturday at the Nordic Skier Enhancement Seminar, Nordic Toboggan Enhancement Seminar, and Waxing Demo. Sunday is full, with a Telemark Clinic, a Nordic Senior Clinic, and ski-touring at Mountain Trails Cross Country Ski Area. For more information and an application, look at pages 7 and 11 in the Fall ‘03 Trail Sweep which you received earlier by e-mail. For an application, click here. Frank Wetherby and Bill Schweikert are already signed up. Join them!
The date of the Level I Avalanche course at Mt. Washington has been changed to March 6 7, 2004. See the NSP Avalanche/ Mountain Travel and Rescue/Nordic online training calendar for more information or call the AMC at 603-446-2727.
The Visitor Center at Northfield Mountain closed to the public after November 16th and will re-open December 17. Trails remain open to hikers and runners but are closed to mountain bikers and horseback riders. If you use the trails, be alert to hunting seasons.
The patrol served up chili to racers and fans at the MIAA Massachusetts Cross Country Running Championships held today at Northfield Mountain. Bill Schweikert, Joannie Duris, candidate Jerry Girard, Bill Osborn, Bob Presutti, and Laurie DiDonato ladled out chili and hot spiced apple cider in return for donations. Although we at least tripled the amount of food and drink, we again sold out by 11:00 AM. We enjoyed good exposure and made more contacts for the patrol. Stopping by our table was Paul Macy, active on our patrol in the seventies.
